EMDR FOR COUPLES

When the Same Wounds Keep Showing Up in Your Relationship

You may love each other and still find yourselves caught in the same painful patterns—one person becoming overwhelmed while the other pulls away, old hurts resurfacing during new disagreements, or trust feeling difficult to rebuild after it has been broken.

EMDR for couples can help you understand what is happening beneath those reactions and work with the experiences that continue to shape how you respond to each other.

WHEN THE RELATIONSHIP FEELS STUCK

What Happens Between Couples Often Has a Story Underneath It

Relationships can bring some of our most deeply learned responses to the surface. When something feels uncertain, painful, or threatening between partners, each person’s nervous system may respond based not only on what is happening in the moment, but also on what it has learned from earlier experiences.

One person may reach for reassurance while the other needs distance. One may become more emotional while the other shuts down. Betrayal, attachment wounds, previous relationships, or experiences from much earlier in life can all influence what happens between you now.

These responses often developed for a reason. Understanding what is underneath them creates an opportunity to work with the experiences driving the pattern—not simply the conflict happening on the surface.

HOW EMDR CAN HELP COUPLES

EMDR Can Support Couples in More Than One Way

EMDR for couples can help partners work with experiences that are affecting their relationship, whether those experiences happened individually or were experienced together.

This may include relationship or attachment wounds, betrayal and loss of trust, or a recent traumatic experience such as a medical crisis, accident, pregnancy loss, or the death of a child or loved one.

Depending on what brings you in, EMDR may focus on an experience affecting one partner, experiences affecting both partners, or a shared event that the couple is trying to process together.

Couples EMDR Can Be Structured Around What You Need

Couples EMDR can take place through ongoing sessions or in a more concentrated intensive format, depending on your needs and what you want to work on.

Standard Couples Sessions

Ongoing sessions allow us to work at a traditional pace, with time between appointments to continue building on the work together.

Couples EMDR Intensives

Longer sessions provide dedicated time to focus on a specific concern or shared experience without being limited to a traditional therapy hour.
